Technology in middle grade fiction

May 2, 2011 at 4:34 am (Uncategorized)

I read an interesting blog entry by Mary Kole in which she discussed the use of technology in kids fiction. I think she hit the nail right on the head (sorry for the cliche). I think many writers of kids lit really are afraid of embracing the use of cell phones and the Internet in their writing. But the reality is, today’s kids are tech saavy. They use the Internet for everything. And the vast majority of kids not only have cell phones, but use them to text constantly. If your characters are kids, it is only logical that they would use their cell phones and, most definitely, the Internet as well to solve their problems/mysteries. Your readers would never understand why a character would go to the library to look up an answer to their mystery when they could just use (which they might even be able to get from the Internet on their cell phone!). Remember… know your audience. 🙂
